I don’t know about you, but for me, the recent horrific events in our country have raised some questions for me. Are we becoming a complacent country where acts of hate are becoming the norm? I detest sharing my opinion on hot topics, but I will on this rare occasion.
I was raised by a father who had roots in the deep south. He was a generous soul that never used demeaning language about those of a different race. That is not to say he didn’t, but he refused to teach hate to his children. I do believe racism is taught. The complete ignorance of those who use horrific names to describe other races leaves me speechless.
While I hear a lot of talk about love and tolerance in society, I experience quite the opposite. While driving to pick up Bailey at camp, I witnessed several bouts of road rage. Impatient people that are intolerant of anyone else. I can’t believe how, as a society, we have grown so numb, so indifferent. We have all experienced some form of intolerance or prejudice in our lives. The reality is that we all come from a common place. How it is that we can elect an African-American man to be president, but we have random killings of the same race because someone doesn’t like how they look or act or what they represent? There is so much wrong in this country, that it is difficult to see the good. However, I know that despite the horror that this country is experiencing, there is plenty of goodness, kindness, and compassion. It is just hard to find it through the unnecessary negativity. I think I will go watch some kitten and puppy videos to free myself of the residue that continues to blanket this country.
