Humbling

There is nothing more humbling than thinking you know what you are doing and finding out you are clueless.    Recently, I got hired to do some freelance work for an ad agency where I would be writing a two minute video script for a non-profit.   I was giddy and frightened all at the same time.

Once I got all the information, I got to work.   Expressing brilliant ideas wrapped in gorgeous semantics….or so I thought.   I sent back this golden script only to be told that it really wasn’t what they were looking for and that I need to use more of the information that they provided to me.    And there it was…….realizing I don’t know what the hell I am doing and passing myself off as if I were the expert.   That is humbling.

The beauty is that I am open to doing it differently and that they didn’t fire me on the spot.  The risk of doing something new is simply being willing to learn.  Willingness is the key.   So, I am back to the drawing board, so to speak, and creating a new script with the correct ingredients.    Now, I am a touch nervous.  There is always that voice repeating old tapes that I am not good enough, that I will do a horrible job and never be hired again.    The reality is that I got hired on my writing, so there is goodness in that.

This novelty of trying new things is a little scary, but the doors that are opening are doing so for a reason.  These experiences are giving me a taste of what is out there for me to do, so I will keep saying “yes” and allowing myself to be open to learning.
